Aflatoun is a methodology of social and financial education for children between the ages of 6 and 14 years of age. Today the program has reached more than 500,000 children in 31 different countries around the World.

In May of 2009, FINCA Peru began the Aflatoun program in Ayacucho. In six months, more than 200 children between the ages of 8 and 12 years old participated in 24 sessions. These sessions were divided into the following modules:

1) Savings and Planning for the Future- The children saved each week and developed an Enterprise Project where they created Christmas cards that were sold in Canada. 150 children saved S/. 2,129 ($US 740) and also earned S/. 511 ($US 180) through the sale of 222 cards.

2) Personal Development- The children worked on the rights and responsibilities of children, their abilities as leaders and members of a team, and finally discussed their goals and roles as members of their families and communities.

3) The World- This module covered various countries in the World, with the key message sent that we are all citizens of the World. The children are very proud to be Peruvian!

4) The Environment - The children demonstrated their commitment to care for the environment by working with recycled materials, doing a garbage cleanup in a nearby park, and performing a show about the environment to teach their families the value of caring for the environment.

On January 12th, 2010, the Aflatoun project began its second cycle in the region of Ayacucho, ran by two volunteers Susy and Jenny. Viviana and Erika trained the new volunteers during the first week of January in Ayacucho. Erika helped to supervise and coordinate the sessions during the months of January and March.

As of March 31, 2010, 163 children (in total 10 groups) have participated in the Aflatoun program in the Ayacucho region. The program runs from Monday to Friday at 2:30 and 4:30pm. The children have been savings since January 26th and have saved in total more than 1200 soles! The children will also recieve earnings of S/. 348.30 for the sale of greetings cards that they have made. The second cycle of Aflatoun will come to a close at the end of April.
